Nissan, Europcar team up to sell, lease electric vehicles from 2010

TOKYO —

Nissan Motor Co and Europcar Groupe, a European leader in the passenger car and utility vehicle rental business, have agreed to form a partnership to sell and lease electric vehicles beginning next year in a bid to promote zero emission mobility worldwide, officials from the two companies said Tuesday.

Under the partnership, Nissan will sell such vehicles to Europcar, which will then lease the cars to its clients, thus serving a broader reach of customers, a Nissan company official said, adding they have yet to determine whether the electric vehicles to be rolled out will carry the Nissan brand.

GM will have an effect on Japanese parts makers

Writing by admin on Thursday, 28 of May , 2009 at 9:01 pm

102 Japanese parts firms will suffer if GM goes bust

TOKYO —

There are 102 parts suppliers and other Japanese companies who may not be able to recover accounts receivable from General Motors Corp if the automotive giant files for bankruptcy, a leading credit research agency said Thursday.

Although many of the firms filed applications requesting that the U.S. government guarantee the receivables with a $5 billion Treasury Department program, not all of them qualified for the federal assistance, Teikoku Databank said.

“The potential risk of a bankruptcy filing triggering turbulence (among corporate creditors) is in place,” the research agency warned.

A total of 133 Japanese companies, including Mitsubishi Electric Corp, Aisin Seiki Co and Bridgestone Corp, have business ties with GM. Of them, 31 sell GM products or provide maintenance services in Japan.

Green War Heats Up

Writing by admin on Saturday, 4 of April , 2009 at 4:17 pm

Anyone who knows cars knew that when Honda announced its new 2010 Honda Insight hybrid would sticker for $3000 less than the current Toyota Prius, thems were fightin’ words. Toyota has fired back today, confirming its rumored plans to drop the price of the 2010 Prius and to build a new, smaller and lower-priced hybrid to slot below it.

“We are developing a low-priced hybrid vehicle like Honda’s Insight,” said Akihiki Otsuka, chief designer of the 2010 Prius. “We are going to compete by expanding our hybrid-vehicle lineup to smaller hybrids, in the class of the Vitz [sold in Japan] and Yaris.”

Otsuka did not say when this Yaris-based hybrid might debut, but previous reports have indicated it could be as soon as 2011. It isn’t the only new hybrid Toyota is planning either. Shortly after Honda announced plans to offer a family of hybrids including a Fit hybrid and a new CR-Z hybrid, Toyota fired back with rumored plans for a new, sporty MR2-themed hybrid and the Yaris-based hybrid.

2010 Toyota Prius and 2010 Honda Insight

Clearly, Toyota is worried about its cross-town rival, and the Japanese automotive giant has every reason to be. The Honda Insight outsold the Toyota Prius in Japan in the month of February and pulled down twice as many orders as Honda was expecting. According to reports, Toyota had actually planned to increase the price of the 2010 Prius slightly over the current model, but now that Honda has undercut the price of the outgoing Prius, Toyota is reportedly working overtime to drop the price of the new Prius.

Reports indicate that Toyota could drop the price as low as $20,940 to eliminate the Insight’s price advantage (the Insight starts at $20,470). This would be a heavy blow to the Honda, which is less efficient than the Toyota and is banking on its affordability. It would also bolster the Prius’ already impressive resume, making it more powerful, more efficient and less expensive than the current generation Prius.

Other reports have indicated that Toyota may make another bold move by continuing to sell the current generation Prius next to the 2010 Prius, but at a reduced price to woo buyers. Toyota would not confirm or deny those reports, but executives in the U.S. and Europe have said that they would not sell both generations of the Prius side-by-side.

Can Toyota afford to drop the price of the 2010 Prius to take on Honda? Toyota has reportedly reduced the cost of its hybrid components by 20% to 35% and has spread the cost around by using the technology on other models, but the company has also invested those savings into new technology on the third-generation Prius. Toyota knows it needs to do something, though, as Prius sales in the U.S. were down 12.6% for 2008, despite the record gas prices last summer. Toyota wants to sell 400,000 Prius cars worldwide in 2010 and it will be tough to do that with Honda undercutting them.

Toyota traditionally keeps pricing information to itself until just before a vehicle launch, so we likely won’t know the company’s final decision on the price of the 2010 Prius until it launches this summer. If Toyota can nullify Honda’s price advantage, though, we may have to revisit our Insight vs. Prius comparison.

BMW mini-car development underway

Writing by admin on Saturday, 4 of April , 2009 at 4:13 pm

Over recent months a collage of rumors surrounding a fourth brand under the BMW umbrella have been circulating, which may now be coming into clearer focus. With government fuel economy and emissions standards tightening both in the US and abroad, BMW, like other carmakers, is being forced to develop more earth-conscious vehicles to offset the fire-breathing monsters from their M division and the behemoths from Rolls-Royce.

The answer may be to go after arch-rival Daimler’s smart brand, but rather than going super-modern, BMW is tipped to design its line-up of city cars around a retro theme. Isetta, which made tiny commuter cars in the 50’s, has been touted as one strong possibility, more likely than the prospect of reviving Triumph into a smart rival when its roots are in roadsters. We reported on the Isetta rumor back in November, but according to AutoExpress, development of the new city-car is officially underway. Whatever badge the new BMW city cars would wear, insiders suggest that motivation would come from small turbocharged gasoline and diesel engines, while hybrids would be reserved for SUVs and other larger vehicles.

Japan’s auto maker profits slide hurting their workforce

Writing by admin on Wednesday, 18 of March , 2009 at 4:13 pm

Its no secret there is a recession in Japan. Toyota, Honda and Nissan have recorded major losses in the last quarter of 2008. Lay-offs in the top 3 auto maker’s personel seem to be bucking the once cherished “job-for-life” mentality.

In the heavily industrial prefecture of Aichi, massive lay-offs mean the economic effect of an export-based economy is even more present. According to news sources, Toyota posted a 28% drop in profits from year-on-year earnings. What that means to the region is there are now more people looking for jobs than there are jobs available. Toyota lays off, then their suppliers lay off.

Toyota is still producing some of the world’s best cars, but like every other car maker, it means they have to trim an already trim operation. The “Toyota Way” of trim 10% and then trim another 10% may go far in a healthy economy, but in current economic condition, its hard to trim 10% off a skeleton…
